Michael Farries Ashby est un ingénieur métallurgiste britannique. Il a été professeur de recherche de la Royal Society et chercheur principal (PI) au Engineering Design Center de l'Université de Cambridge. Il est connu pour ses contributions en science des matériaux dans le domaine de la sélection des matériaux. En 1990, Ashby a été élu membre de la National Academy of Engineering pour ses contributions exceptionnelles à la compréhension du comportement mécanique des matériaux et pour le développement de formats utiles pour la conception. Ashby est le fils du principal botaniste et éducateur Lord Ashby. Il a fait ses études au Campbell College de Belfast et à l'Université de Cambridge où il a étudié les tripos en sciences naturelles en tant qu'étudiant du Queens 'College de Cambridge. Il a obtenu son baccalauréat ès arts en métallurgie en 1957 (First Class Honours); sa maîtrise ès arts en 1959 et son doctorat en 1961.
