Leslie Thomas, OBE (22 mars 1931 - 6 mai 2014) était un auteur gallois surtout connu pour son roman comique The Virgin Soldiers.

Thomas est né à Newport, Monmouthshire, Pays de Galles. Il est devenu orphelin à l'âge de 12 ans, lorsque son père marin a été perdu en mer et sa mère est décédée quelques mois plus tard d'un cancer. Il a ensuite été élevé dans la maison d'un Dr Barnardo; l'histoire de cette éducation a fait l'objet de son premier livre autobiographique, This Time Next Week.

Thomas a fréquenté la Kingston Technical School, puis il a suivi un cours de journalisme au South-West Essex Technical College à Walthamstow. En 1949, il fut appelé au service national et entreprit une période de service de deux ans à Singapour avec le Royal Army Pay Corps. Pendant son séjour, il a été brièvement impliqué dans l'action militaire contre les rebelles communistes lors de l'urgence malaise. Il a également commencé à écrire de courts articles destinés à être publiés dans des journaux anglais.

À son retour en Angleterre en 1951, Thomas a repris son travail pour le groupe de presse local du nord de Londres où il avait travaillé avant son service national, mais en moins de cinq ans, il a travaillé pour l'agence de presse Exchange Telegraph, maintenant Extel, et finalement avec le Journal London Evening News, d'abord en tant que sous-rédacteur en chef, plus tard en tant que journaliste. Il est resté avec l'Evening News jusqu'en 1965, date à laquelle il s'est lancé à plein temps dans sa carrière d'écrivain.

Historians of the Second World War have hitherto omitted to mention that the first British raid on German-occupied France took place within four months of Dunkirk.
