Gladwell est né à Fareham, Hampshire, en Angleterre. Sa mère est Joyce (née Nation) Gladwell, une psychothérapeute jamaïcaine. Son père, Graham Gladwell, était un professeur de mathématiques de Kent, en Angleterre. Quand il avait six ans, sa famille a déménagé de Southampton à la communauté mennonite d'Elmira, Ontario, Canada. Il a deux frères. pays, où il a fréquenté une église mennonite.
