Chris est né à Toledo, Ohio et a grandi à Mansfield, Ohio. Son père était patrouilleur routier et sa mère vendait du gros électroménager dans un grand magasin. Il a fréquenté l'Ohio State University et le Brooks Institute of Photography à Santa Barbara. Il a déménagé en Californie à l'âge de 19 ans et a vécu sur la côte centrale jusqu'en 2003, date à laquelle il a déménagé à Hawaï.

Avant de publier son premier roman, Practical Demonkeeping en 1992, il a travaillé comme couvreur, commis d'épicerie, vérificateur de nuit d'hôtel et courtier d'assurance, serveur, photographe et DJ rock and roll.
