Howard Zinn (24 août 1922 - 27 janvier 2010) était un historien américain, dramaturge, philosophe, penseur socialiste et vétéran de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Il a été directeur du département d'histoire et de sciences sociales au Spelman College et professeur de sciences politiques à l'Université de Boston. Zinn a écrit plus de 20 livres, dont son best-seller et influent A People's History of the United States en 1980. En 2007, il en a publié une version pour les jeunes lecteurs, A Young People's History of the United States.
Zinn s'est décrit comme "quelque chose d'anarchiste, quelque chose de socialiste. Peut-être un socialiste démocrate". Il a beaucoup écrit sur le mouvement des droits civiques, le mouvement anti-guerre et l'histoire du travail aux États-Unis. Ses mémoires, You Can't Be Neutral on a Moving Train (Beacon Press, 2002), étaient également le titre d'un documentaire de 2004 sur la vie et l'œuvre de Zinn. Zinn est décédé d'une crise cardiaque en 2010, à 87 ans
Zinn est né dans une famille d'immigrants juifs à Brooklyn le 24 août 1922. Son père, Eddie Zinn, né en Autriche-Hongrie, a immigré aux États-Unis avec son frère Samuel avant le déclenchement de la Première Guerre mondiale. Sa mère, Jenny (Rabinowitz ) Zinn, émigré de la ville d'Irkoutsk en Sibérie orientale. Ses parents se sont d'abord rencontrés en tant qu'ouvriers de la même usine. Son père a travaillé comme creuseur de fossés et nettoyeur de vitres pendant la Grande Dépression. Son père et sa mère ont dirigé un magasin de bonbons du quartier pendant une brève période, s'en sortent à peine. Pendant de nombreuses années, son père a été membre du syndicat des serveurs et a travaillé comme serveur pour les mariages et les bar-mitsva.

"In the years 1956 to 1963, I was living in Atlanta, Georgia, teaching at Spelman College, a college for African-American women. I became involved, along with my students, in the movement against racial segregation that built up slowly to 1960 and then exploded throughout the South with sit-ins, Freedom Rides, mass demonstrations. When student veterans of the sit-ins formed the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), they asked me to become a member of their Executive Board. I became both a participant and a chronicler of activities in Atlanta and other cities. When Beacon Press in Boston asked me to write a book on the role of the NAACP, I suggested that instead I would write about the young people in SNCC, who were the leading edge of the movement in the deep South. The result was not a comprehensive scholarly book on SNCC, but a work of on-the-spot reportage, based on time spent in southwest Georgia, Selma, Alabama, Hattiesburg, and Mississippi, and in the 1964 Freedom Summer in Mississippi."
