Holly Black née Riggenbach est née à West Long Branch, New Jersey en 1971, c'est une écrivaine et éditrice américaine surtout connue pour ses romans pour enfants et jeunes adultes. Son œuvre la plus récente est la série New York Times Bestselling Young Adult the Folk of the Air. Elle est également bien connue pour The Spiderwick Chronicles, une série de livres fantastiques pour enfants qu'elle a créés avec l'écrivain et illustrateur Tony DiTerlizzi, et sa première trilogie de romans pour jeunes adultes officiellement intitulée Modern Faerie Tales. Black a obtenu un B.A. en anglais du College of New Jersey en 1994. Elle a travaillé comme rédactrice de production pour des revues médicales, dont The Journal of Pain, pendant ses études à l'Université Rutgers. Elle envisageait de devenir bibliothécaire comme carrière d'appoint, mais l'écriture l'a éloignée.
