Melissa de la Cruz est née à Manille, aux Philippines, et dit qu'elle veut être auteur depuis l'âge de onze ans.
Elle a immigré aux États-Unis avec sa famille à l'âge de 13 ans, en 1985, et ils se sont installés à San Francisco, où elle est diplômée du Convent of the Sacred Heart High School. Elle a ensuite étudié l'histoire de l'art et l'anglais à l'Université de Columbia à New York.
Après ses études, elle a travaillé comme consultante en informatique.
De La Cruz a écrit son premier roman à 22 ans alors qu'elle vivait à New York et travaillait chez Bankers Trust.
Ce roman ne s'est finalement pas vendu, mais un éditeur de Little, Brown lui a suggéré de devenir journaliste pour travailler sur ses crédits d'écriture professionnelle.
Elle a commencé à travailler en freelance et a publié son premier essai dans New York Press en 1996. Elle a également travaillé comme rédactrice beauté et mode jusqu'à ce qu'elle vende son premier roman, The Cat's Meow, en 1998.
De la Cruz a publié des articles dans des périodiques tels que The New York Times, Cosmopolitan, Seventeen, Teen Vogue et Harper's Magazine.
