Le premier ouvrage publié de Dahl, inspiré d'une rencontre avec CS Forester, était Shot Down Over Libya. Aujourd'hui, l'histoire est publiée sous le titre A Piece of Cake. L'histoire, sur ses aventures en temps de guerre, a été achetée par le Saturday Evening Post pour 900 $ et l'a propulsé dans une carrière d'écrivain. Son titre a été inspiré par un article très inexact et sensationnaliste sur l'accident qui l'a aveuglé, qui affirmait qu'il avait été abattu au lieu de simplement devoir atterrir à cause du manque de carburant.
