Elias Canetti (25 juillet 1905 - 14 août 1994) était un écrivain de langue allemande, né à Ruse, en Bulgarie, dans une famille séfarade. Ils ont déménagé à Manchester, en Angleterre, mais son père est décédé en 1912 et sa mère a emmené ses trois fils en Europe continentale. Ils s'installent à Vienne.

Canetti a déménagé en Angleterre en 1938 après l'Anschluss pour échapper à la persécution nazie. Il est devenu citoyen britannique en 1952. Il est connu comme romancier, dramaturge, mémorialiste et écrivain de non-fiction. A reçu le prix Nobel de littérature en 1981, "pour ses écrits aux perspectives larges, sa richesse d'idées et sa force artistique". Il est surtout connu pour son livre non romanesque Crowds and Strength, entre autres œuvres.

This is the third volume of Elias Canetti's autobiography, following "The Tongue Set Free" and "The Torch in My Ear". It is set in Vienna between 1931 and 1937, at a time when the European catastrophe was already clear to anyone with eyes to see. The book is both a portrait of its time and an intellectual and spiritual autobiography. Canetti describes his relationships with Herman Broch, Robert Musil, Fritz Wortruba, the composer Alban Berg, and Alma Mahler.
