Il est neuf fois lauréat du China's Galaxy Award et a également reçu le prix Hugo 2015 pour son roman The Three-Body Problem ainsi que le prix Locus 2017 pour Death's End. Il est également lauréat du Chinese Nebula Award. Dans les traductions anglaises de ses œuvres, son nom est donné comme Cixin Liu. Il est membre de la China Science Writers Association et vice-président de la Shanxi Writers Association. Il est aussi appelé "Da Liu" ("Big Liu").

Set against the backdrop of China's Cultural Revolution, a secret military project sends signals into space to establish contact with aliens.
