Thomas Hylland Eriksen est professeur d'anthropologie sociale à l'Université d'Oslo. Né à Oslo, il a effectué des travaux de terrain à Trinidad et à Maurice. Ses domaines de recherche incluent l'identité, le nationalisme, la mondialisation et les politiques identitaires. Eriksen a terminé son dr. polit.-diplôme en 1991, et a été nommé professeur en 1995, à l'âge de 33 ans. Dans les années 1993-2001, il a été rédacteur en chef de la revue Samtiden.

Le livre, "Small Places - Large Issues" en anglais, est également utilisé dans les cours d'introduction dans de nombreux autres pays, et a été largement traduit, tout comme son autre manuel majeur, "Ethnicity and Nationalism: Anthropological Perspectives". Eriksen est un contributeur fréquent d'articles de journaux en Scandinavie.
En 2011, le professeur Eriksen a reçu une bourse avancée du Conseil européen de la recherche.
