Karl Heinrich Marx était un philosophe, économiste, sociologue, historien, journaliste et socialiste révolutionnaire allemand (5 mai 1818 - 14 mars 1883). Ses idées ont joué un rôle important dans la fondation de la sociologie et dans le développement des mouvements socialistes. Marx était considéré comme l'un des plus grands économistes de l'histoire. Il a publié plusieurs livres au cours de sa vie, dont les plus importants sont Le Manifeste du Parti communiste (1848) et Das Kapital (1867-1894). Issu d'une riche famille bourgeoise de Trèves en Rhénanie prussienne, Marx a étudié à l'université de Bonn et à l'université de Berlin, où il s'est intéressé aux idées philosophiques des jeunes hégéliens. Il a été associé à Jenny von Westphalen en 1836 après JC et l'a épousée en 1843 après ses études. Il écrit pour un journal radical à Cologne et commence à développer sa théorie du matérialisme dialectique. Après avoir déménagé à Paris en 1843, il commence à écrire pour d'autres journaux radicaux.

In 1859 Marx published A Contribution To The Critique Of Political Economy, which was his first serious economic work. Marx discusses the production and naturalization of capitalism. His theory is that the course of history is dependent on economic developments. From the preface “In the social production that men carry on, they enter into definite relations that are indispensable and independent of their will, relations of production which correspond to a definite stage of development of their material forces of production. The sum total of these relations of production constitutes the economic structure of society, the real foundation, on which rises a legal and political superstructure, and to which correspond definite forms of social consciousness. The mode of production in material life determines the general character of the social, political, and intellectual processes of life. It is not the consciousness of men which determines their existence; it is on the contrary their social existence which determines their consciousness.”
