Peter Grünwald dirige le groupe d'apprentissage automatique du CWI à Amsterdam, aux Pays-Bas. Il est également professeur titulaire d'apprentissage statistique à l'institut mathématique de l'université de Leiden. Actuellement président de l'Association for Computational Learning, l'organisation qui gère COLT, la principale conférence annuelle mondiale sur la théorie de l'apprentissage automatique, il a été coprésident du programme de COLT en 2015 et a également présidé l'UAI - une autre conférence de premier plan sur le ML - en 2010/2011. En plus de publier sur des sites de ML comme NIPS, COLT et UAI, il contribue également régulièrement à des revues statistiques telles que Annals of Statistics. Il est l'auteur du livre The Minimum Description Length Principle (MIT Press, 2007 ; voir ici pour une introduction à jour (2020), beaucoup plus courte), qui est devenu la référence standard pour l'approche MDL de l'apprentissage. En 2010, il a été co-récipiendaire du prix Van Dantzig, la plus haute distinction néerlandaise en statistique et recherche opérationnelle. Il a reçu les bourses NWO VIDI (2005), VICI (2010) et TOP-1 (2016).

Nanobiocatalysis has rapidly developed into a subarea of enzyme biotechnology. It combines the advances in nanotechnology that have generated nanoscale materials of different sizes, shapes, and physicochemical properties, and the excellent characteristics of biocatalysts into an innovative technology.

This book provides an overview of the various relations between nanotechnology and biocatalysis. It discusses the fabrication and application of nanomaterials for the immobilization of enzymes used in the sustainable production of goods and chemicals.

Nanosupports have several advantages compared with bulk solid materials because of their high surface area, which results in a significantly reduced mass transfer limitation and comparatively high enzyme loading. These characteristics are also of great use for applications in the fields of enzymatic biosensors, biofuel cells, bioelectronics, and photoelectrochemical analyte detection, where conductive nanomaterials improve the rate of electron transfer.

The book also presents an overview of nanotoxicology and covers nanostructured enzyme catalysis in organic solvents and its potential application for biodiesel production, probing of enzymatic activity, and identification of enzyme functions of inorganic nanoparticles as enzyme mimics.
