Lee Aaron Segel était un mathématicien appliqué principalement au Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute et au Weizmann Institute of Science. Il est particulièrement connu pour son travail sur l'apparition spontanée de l'ordre dans la convection, les moisissures visqueuses et la chimiotaxie.
Lee Segel est né en 1932 à Newton, Massachusetts, de Minna Segel, professeur d'art, et de Louis Segel, partenaire des tailleurs Oppenheim-Segel. Louis Segel était en quelque sorte un intellectuel, comme on pouvait le voir dans sa maison à partir, par exemple, des estampes de Kollwitz et de Beckman et de l'édition Shakespeare and Co. d'Ulysse, toutes achetées en Europe dans les années 1930. Les deux parents étaient d'origine judéo-lituanienne, issus de familles qui ont immigré à Boston vers la fin du XIXe siècle. Les graines de l'énorme vocabulaire ultérieur de Segel pourraient en partie provenir de la lecture (et de l'action) de son père selon laquelle l'effet principal d'une école préparatoire était sur le vocabulaire de ses diplômés. Segel est diplômé de Harvard en 1953, avec spécialisation en mathématiques. Pensant qu'il pourrait vouloir se lancer dans le tout nouveau domaine de l'informatique, il a commencé des études supérieures au MIT, où il s'est plutôt concentré sur les mathématiques appliquées.
En 1959, il épousa Ruth Galinski, avocate et cousine éloignée, dans son Londres natal, où ils passèrent les deux premières années de leur vie conjugale. Plus tard, 4 enfants sont nés (Joel '61, Susan '62, Daniel '64 et Michael '66), et encore plus tard, 18 petits-enfants. En 1973, la famille a déménagé à Rehovot, en Israël.
Il est décédé en 2005.
