John E. McMurry, né le 27 juillet 1942 à New York, est professeur émérite au département de chimie et de biologie chimique de l'université Cornell. Il a reçu un A.B. de l'Université Harvard en 1964 et son doctorat. de l'Université de Columbia en 1967 en travaillant avec Gilbert Stork. Après avoir obtenu son doctorat, il a rejoint la faculté de l'Université de Californie à Santa Cruz en 1967 et a déménagé à l'Université Cornell en 1980.
