Farouk El-Baz est un scientifique et géologue égypto-américain qui a joué un rôle crucial dans le programme spatial des États-Unis, notamment dans les missions Apollo sur la Lune. Il est né le 2 janvier 1938 à Zagazig, en Égypte, et a obtenu son doctorat. en géologie de l'Université des sciences et technologies du Missouri.
El-Baz a rejoint la NASA en 1967 en tant que chercheur scientifique et est devenu une partie intégrante du programme Apollo. Il était responsable de la formation des astronautes sur la géologie lunaire et a joué un rôle déterminant dans la sélection des sites d'atterrissage pour les missions Apollo. On lui attribue le développement de la technique d'utilisation de l'imagerie orbitale pour étudier et cartographier la surface de la lune, ce qui a aidé à identifier les sites d'atterrissage potentiels et à comprendre la géologie de la lune.
Après avoir quitté la NASA en 1975, El-Baz a travaillé pour plusieurs organisations, dont la National Geographic Society, où il a été conseiller scientifique. Il a également été directeur du Center for Remote Sensing de l'Université de Boston, où il a poursuivi ses recherches sur l'utilisation de la technologie de télédétection en géologie et en archéologie.
