Le professeur Klaus Schwab (1938, Ravensburg, Allemagne) est le fondateur et président exécutif du Forum économique mondial. En 1971, il publie Modern Enterprise Management in Mechanical Engineering. Il soutient dans ce livre qu'une entreprise doit servir non seulement les actionnaires mais toutes les parties prenantes pour atteindre une croissance et une prospérité à long terme. Pour promouvoir le concept de partie prenante, il fonde la même année le Forum économique mondial.
Le professeur Schwab est titulaire de doctorats en économie (Université de Fribourg) et en ingénierie (Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Suisse) et a obtenu un master en administration publique (MPA) de la Kennedy School of Government de l'Université de Harvard. En 1972, en plus de son rôle de chef de file au Forum, il devient professeur à l'Université de Genève. Il a depuis reçu de nombreuses distinctions internationales et nationales, dont 17 doctorats honorifiques.
