Paulo Coelho est né à Rio de Janeiro, au Brésil, le 24 août 1947. Adolescent, Coelho souhaitait devenir écrivain, mais sa mère avait une opinion différente lorsqu'il lui a dit : « Chère ; ton père est un ingénieur, un homme logique, pratique, avec une vision très claire du monde. À l'âge de seize ans, l'introversion et la résistance de Coelho aux modes de vie traditionnels ont conduit ses parents à l'envoyer dans un établissement psychiatrique, ce qui l'a conduit à en fuir trois fois avant d'en être finalement libéré à l'âge de vingt ans ! Coelho a ensuite commenté : "Ce n'était pas qu'ils (ses parents) voulaient me faire du mal, ils ne savaient tout simplement pas quoi faire de moi. Ils ne l'ont pas fait pour me détruire, mais pour me garder." et conformément à la volonté de ses parents ; Coelho entre à la faculté de droit et abandonne son vieux rêve de devenir écrivain. et un an plus tard ; Coelho a quitté l'école et a vécu une vie de bohème, voyageant dans de nombreux endroits ; Amérique du Sud, Afrique du Nord, Mexique, Europe, et a commencé à se droguer dans les années 1960. À son retour au Brésil, Coelho a travaillé comme auteur-compositeur pour certains chanteurs et a été arrêté en 1974 pour « actes subversifs » pendant le régime militaire en vigueur à l'époque, qui considérait les compositions lyriques de Coelho comme un « gauchiste » dangereux ! Coelho a également travaillé comme acteur, journaliste et metteur en scène avant de se consacrer entièrement à l'écriture.
