Dodson, nato a Londra l'11 settembre 1962, ha studiato alla Langley Grammar School (1975–81), prima di trasferirsi al Collingwood College, Durham (1981-2). Ha completato una laurea presso l'Università di Liverpool (1985), e un MPhil (1986, Museum Practice and Archaeology) e PhD (1995, Egyptology) al Christ's College di Cambridge. Ha iniziato ad insegnare all'Università di Bristol nell'ottobre 1996, ricoprendo anche la carica di Simpson Professor of Egyptology presso l'American University del Cairo da gennaio a luglio 2013. I suoi principali interessi di ricerca riguardano l'Antico Egitto, con particolare attenzione alla storia e alla cronologia dinastica , architettura della tomba, design del sarcofago e della bara, equipaggiamento canopico e storia dell'egittologia; è anche uno storico delle marine della fine del XIX e dell'inizio del XX secolo e ha scritto sulle tombe reali della Gran Bretagna.
