David Rothery è professore di geoscienze planetarie presso la Open University, dove presiede un modulo di livello 2 Planetary Science and the Search for Life e un modulo di livello 1 Volcanoes, Earthquakes and Tsunamis. Fa parte del Senato della Open University. Dal 1999 al 2004 ha lavorato al progetto Beagle2 guidato da Colin Pillinger. Nel 2006 è stato nominato scienziato capo nel Regno Unito per il MIXS (Mercury Imaging X-ray Spectrometer) sulla missione congiunta dell'Agenzia spaziale europea/JAXA su Mercurio denominata BepiColombo. Guida il gruppo di lavoro sulla superficie e la composizione del mercurio dell'Agenzia spaziale europea in preparazione per il BepiColombo missione, che è stata lanciata con successo il 20 ottobre 2018. È stato più volte ospite di The Sky at Night ed è spesso presente o citato in TV, radio, stampa e notizie online su scienza planetaria, eruzioni vulcaniche, terremoti e tsunami .
