Bertolt Brecht: scrittore, regista teatrale e poeta tedesco, e uno dei più importanti scrittori teatrali del XX secolo. Bertolt Brecht nasce il 10 febbraio 1898 ad Augusta da padre protestante e madre cattolica. Scrisse poesie e prosa a livello secondario e nel 1917 si iscrisse alla Facoltà di Medicina e Scienze Naturali di Monaco, oltre a frequentare lezioni di letteratura, filosofia e storia dell'arte. Si trasferì a Monaco per lavorare come consulente teatrale al Chamber Theatre, dopodiché si trasferì a Berlino per iniziare la sua carriera di regista e sceneggiatore.Fu costretto a fuggire in Danimarca dopo che Hitler prese il potere nel 1933 a causa delle sue idee antinaziste. La fuga seguì successivamente l'incursione delle forze tedesche fino a raggiungere gli Stati Uniti d'America, per poi tornare in patria nel 1948 e assumere la direzione del teatro tedesco a Berlino Est. L'oppressione collettiva e il ruolo del potere nel decidere il destino, il tutto nell'ambito di trame drammatiche non prive di comica ironia. Ha ricevuto il Premio Nazionale della Germania dell'Est nel 1951 e il Premio Internazionale Lenin per la Pace nel 1954. È stato membro dell'Accademia delle Arti di Berlino, poi l'ha presieduta fino alla sua morte e ha anche presieduto il PEN Club in entrambe le Germania. Bertolt Brecht morì a Berlino il 14 agosto 1956.
