Dodson, nato a Londra l'11 settembre 1962, ha studiato alla Langley Grammar School (1975–81), prima di trasferirsi al Collingwood College, Durham (1981-2). Ha completato una laurea presso l'Università di Liverpool (1985), e un MPhil (1986, Museum Practice and Archaeology) e PhD (1995, Egyptology) al Christ's College di Cambridge.
