Paul Oliver (1927-2017) è stato un uomo di molti interessi e talenti, uno storico dell'architettura e uno dei massimi studiosi mondiali di architettura vernacolare, ha curato tra le sue numerose pubblicazioni l'"Encyclopaedia of Vernacular Architecture of the World" (EVAW), ora 20 anni dopo in preparazione alla sua 2a edizione, a cui partecipa DW. Fu anche una delle massime autorità mondiali sul blues e scrisse alcune delle storie più autorevoli del genere, tra cui la “Storia del blues” (1989).

Conosce già i suoi libri: Shelter and Society (1969), Shelter in Africa (1971), solo per citarne due. Paul divenne un'influenza diretta nel 1973 presso l'Architectural Association, Londra, l'anno in cui noi - Farokh Afshar, Allan Cain e John Norton - fondammo Development Workshop.

Ha esaminato la nostra tesi congiunta di AA, sul "Potenziale di costruzione indigena in un paese in via di sviluppo - Oman", e, pur apprezzandone la completezza, ha posto in modo significativo la domanda: "A chi è rivolto?" aggiungendo che qualsiasi lavoro del genere "deve essere comprensibile per l'utente previsto". Abbiamo preso a cuore questo messaggio nel nostro lavoro e ci è servito bene nelle comunità vulnerabili molto numerose e diffuse in cui ha lavorato DW.

Paul è diventato un membro onorario di DW France nel 2000, e lui, sua moglie e collaboratore Val hanno visitato per la prima volta l'ufficio di DW nel sud-ovest rurale della Francia per spiegare il suo ambizioso progetto EVAW (a cui abbiamo contribuito). Una visita successiva è stata specificatamente per aiutarci a esplorare idee su come registrare e trasmettere la vasta eredità di DW. Il progetto di archivio online sul lavoro di DW che ora sta diventando realtà è uno dei risultati della sua generosità nel dedicare tempo ed energie ai suoi ex studenti trent'anni dopo!

Paul ha avuto un'influenza forte e stimolante su DW, ma soprattutto era un amico delizioso e perspicace e gli è mancato molto.

The West has drawn upon Hinduism on a wide scale, from hatha yoga and meditation techniques, to popular culture in music and fashion, yet the contribution of Hinduism to the counter-culture of the 1960s has not been analysed in full. Hinduism and the 1960s looks at the youth culture of the 1960s and early 1970s, and the way in which it was influenced by Hinduism and Indian culture. It examines the origins of the 1960s counter-culture in the Beat movement of the 1950s, and their interest in Eastern religion, notably Zen. When the Beatles visited India to study transcendental meditation, there was a rapid expansion in interest in Hinduism. Young people were already heading east on the so-called 'Hippie Trail', looking for spiritual enlightenment and an escape from the material lifestyle of the West. Paul Oliver examines the lifestyle which they adopted, from living in ashrams to experimenting with drugs, sexual liberation, ayurvedic medicine and yoga. This engaging book analyses the interaction between Hinduism and the West, and the way in which each affected the other. It demonstrates the ways in which contemporary Western society has learned from the ancient religion of Hinduism, and incorporated such teachings as yoga, meditation and a natural holistic lifestyle, into daily life. Each chapter contains a summary and further reading guidance, and a glossary is included at the end of the book, making this ideal reading for courses on Hinduism, Indian religions, and religion and popular culture.
