Louis Pierre Althusser (francese: 16 ottobre 1918-22 ottobre 1990) è stato un filosofo marxista francese. È nato in Algeria e ha studiato all'École normale supérieure di Parigi, dove alla fine è diventato professore di filosofia. Althusser è stato un membro di lunga data e talvolta un forte critico del Partito Comunista Francese (Parti communiste français, PCF). I suoi argomenti e le sue tesi erano opposti alle minacce che vedeva attaccare i fondamenti teorici del marxismo. Montesquieu accepted as given the political notions current in French absolutism, while Rousseau attempted to impose by moral conversion an already outdated mode of production. Althusser argues that Marx was able to establish a theory of historical materialism and the possibility of a Marxist philosophy of dialectical materialism not simply by turning his back on Hegel, but by extracting and converting certain categories from Hegel's Logic and applying them to English political economy and French socialist political theory.
