Louis Pierre Althusser (francese: 16 ottobre 1918-22 ottobre 1990) è stato un filosofo marxista francese. È nato in Algeria e ha studiato all'École normale supérieure di Parigi, dove alla fine è diventato professore di filosofia. Althusser è stato un membro di lunga data e talvolta un forte critico del Partito Comunista Francese (Parti communiste français, PCF). I suoi argomenti e le sue tesi erano opposti alle minacce che vedeva attaccare i fondamenti teorici del marxismo. Questi includevano sia l'influenza dell'empirismo sulla teoria marxista, sia gli orientamenti socialisti umanisti e riformisti che si manifestarono come divisioni nei partiti comunisti europei, così come il problema del culto della personalità e dell'ideologia. Althusser è comunemente indicato come un marxista strutturale, anche se il suo rapporto con altre scuole di strutturalismo francese non è una semplice affiliazione ed è stato critico nei confronti di molti aspetti dello strutturalismo. La vita di Althusser è stata segnata da periodi di intensa malattia mentale. Nel 1980 uccise sua moglie, la sociologa Hélène Rytmann, strangolandola. È stato dichiarato non idoneo a sostenere un processo per pazzia e ricoverato in un ospedale psichiatrico per tre anni. Ha svolto poco altro lavoro accademico, morendo nel 1990.
