José Saramago è uno scrittore e giornalista portoghese nato il 16 novembre 1922 nella regione di Arinaga (Portogallo centrale) da una famiglia di contadini poveri. * Ha iniziato la sua vita come fabbro, poi come giornalista e traduttore, prima di dedicarsi interamente alla letteratura. Pubblicò il suo primo romanzo, La terra del peccato, nel 1947, smise di scrivere per quasi vent'anni e nel 1966 pubblicò la sua prima raccolta di poesie, Poesie possibili.
