Facoltà di Ingegneria Dipartimento di Ingegneria Civile e Ambientale Michael ha curato il passaggio della geologia ingegneristica dal Dipartimento di Geologia al Dipartimento di Ingegneria Civile e la sua fusione con il corso di Laurea Magistrale in Meccanica del Suolo, ristabilendo così il legame esistente tra i corsi di gli anni '50 e l'inizio degli anni '60, quando entrambi si trovavano nella Goldsmiths Annex delle Royal School Mines a South Kensington. Dal 1984 è responsabile del Master in Engineering Geology e in tale veste ha assicurato, nominando esaminatori dal continente, che il corso sia ben conosciuto in Europa. Attualmente sta prestando servizio come External Examiner per un Master in Applied Geosciences presso l'Università di Hong Kong e presidente del Comitato responsabile per l'insegnamento e la formazione presso l'Associazione internazionale di geologia e ambiente di ingegneria. Michael è stato chiamato più volte a fornire consulenza su problemi industriali e contrattuali sia nel Regno Unito che all'estero al settore pubblico e privato. È stato un membro attivo della Geological Society of London dove ha ricoperto vari incarichi tra cui vicepresidente e capo del gruppo di ingegneria, editore del Quarterly Journal of Engineering Geology e presidente del comitato di coordinamento delle promozioni.
