È stato nominato Professore di Geografia nel 1984 ed è stato a capo della School of Geography dal 1984 al 1994. Dal 1995 al 1997 è stato Presidente dell'Oxford Development Program e Pro-Vice-Cancelliere dell'università. È diventato Master del St Cross College nel 2003 e ha lasciato l'incarico nel 2011. Nel 1970 è stato eletto membro dell'Institute of British Geographers (di cui in seguito è stato membro del Council) e Fellow della Royal Geographical Society.
