Peter Grünwald è a capo del gruppo di apprendimento automatico presso CWI ad Amsterdam, nei Paesi Bassi. È anche professore ordinario di Apprendimento statistico presso l'istituto matematico dell'Università di Leiden. Attualmente presidente dell'Associazione per l'apprendimento computazionale, l'organizzazione che gestisce COLT, la principale conferenza annuale mondiale sulla teoria dell'apprendimento automatico, è stato co-presidente del programma di COLT nel 2015 e ha anche presieduto l'UAI – un'altra importante conferenza di ML – nel 2010/2011. Oltre a pubblicare in sedi ML come NIPS, COLT e UAI, contribuisce regolarmente anche a riviste di statistica come Annals of Statistics. È l'autore del libro The Minimum Description Length Principle, (MIT Press, 2007; vedi qui per un'introduzione aggiornata (2020), molto più breve), che è diventato il riferimento standard per l'approccio MDL all'apprendimento. Nel 2010 è stato co-insignito del premio Van Dantzig, il più alto riconoscimento olandese in statistica e ricerca operativa. Ha ricevuto borse di studio NWO VIDI (2005), VICI (2010) e TOP-1 (2016).

Biocatalysis has meanwhile become an essential tool in the chemical industry and is the central part of biotechnology, defined by the European Federation of Biotechnology already in 1988 as “the integration of natural sciences and organisms, cells, parts thereof, and molecular analogues for products and services.” As to the industrial application, biocatalysis is the core of industrial biotechnology, also known as white biotechnology; “white” stands for the positive impact on the environment associated with the use of biocatalysts as enzymes or whole cells in chemical processes as an alternative to chemical catalysts. Drivers of this development are the big challenges resulting from concerns about global climate change and the need for an assured energy supply. These aspects are discussed in Chapter 1 together with an overview of the many areas of daily life where biocatalysts are already employed.
