Orazio Svilto è Professore Ordinario di Elettronica Quantistica al Politecnico di Milano e Direttore del Centro di Elettronica Quantistica del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche. La sua ricerca ha coperto un'ampia gamma di attività nel campo della fisica dei laser e dell'elettronica quantistica, a partire dall'inizio di queste discipline. Questa attività include la generazione e l'applicazione di impulsi ad altissima frequenza, lo sviluppo di tecniche di risonanza laser e selezione del modo, applicazioni di laser in biologia e medicina e sviluppo di laser a stato solido. Il professor Svelto è autore di più di 150 articoli scientifici e la sua ricerca è stata oggetto di più di 50 articoli su invito e conferenze internazionali. È stato presidente del programma della nona conferenza internazionale sull'elettronica quantistica (1976), presidente del comitato del programma europeo per CLEO '85 e CLEO '90 ed è stato copresidente generale della prima conferenza CLEO-Europa (1994). È membro eletto dell'Accademia dei XL italiana e membro IEEE Fellow.
