Roger Scruton, morto di cancro ai polmoni all'età di 75 anni, era un filosofo e un controverso intellettuale pubblico. Attivo nei campi dell'estetica, dell'arte, della musica, della filosofia politica e dell'architettura, sia all'interno che all'esterno del mondo accademico, si è dedicato a coltivare la bellezza, “reincantare il mondo” e dare rigore intellettuale al conservatorismo.

Membro del gruppo tradizionalista-conservatore Salisbury, ha contribuito a fondare la Salisbury Review, che ha curato dal 1982 al 2001. Questo trimestrale, che è stato diffuso nel blocco sovietico, spesso in forma samizdat, è stato criticato in Gran Bretagna per avere atteggiamenti retrogradi. Nel 1984 ha difeso Ray Honeyford, il preside di Bradford che aveva contestato il valore dell'educazione multiculturale.
