Nata il 27 luglio 1973 a Teheran, in Iran, Cassandra Clare è una scrittrice e scrittrice di romanzi americano-iraniano-americana. È meglio conosciuta per aver creato la serie fantasy di Mortal Instruments dal 2007 fino all'uscita degli ultimi capitoli nel 2014. Claire è nata Judith Rumelt da genitori di origine americana a Teheran, in Iran. I suoi genitori sono Elizabeth e Richard Romelt. Hanno servito rispettivamente come professori presso l'Academy of Business Administration e come scrittore.
Il nonno materno di Clare era il produttore cinematografico Max Rosenberg. Claire è ebrea, ma descrive la sua famiglia come non religiosa.
