In the last few years the growing significance of the Middle East in the international economy has been highlighted in the financial press, with articles appearing almost daily about massive new trade deals concluded with particular countries. Despite this attention, no comprehensive study has been made of the external economic relations of the region as a whole. It was this gap that prompted the author to write this book, which attempts to analyse recent trends in Middle Eastern trade and investment and to consider their implications, both for the region itself, and for the world at large.
