Paulo Coelho è nato a Rio de Janeiro, in Brasile, il 24 agosto 1947. Da adolescente, Coelho desiderava diventare uno scrittore, ma sua madre aveva un'opinione diversa quando le disse: “Cara; tuo padre è un ingegnere, un uomo logico, pratico, con una visione del mondo molto chiara”. All'età di sedici anni, l'introversione e la resistenza di Coelho ai modi di vita tradizionali hanno portato i suoi genitori a mandarlo in un istituto psichiatrico, cosa che lo ha portato a fuggirne tre volte prima di esserne finalmente liberato all'età di vent'anni! Coelho in seguito ha commentato: "Non era che loro (i suoi genitori) volessero farmi del male, semplicemente non sapevano cosa fare con me. Non l'hanno fatto per distruggermi, ma per tenermi". e secondo i desideri dei suoi genitori; Coelho va alla scuola di legge e abbandona il suo vecchio sogno di diventare uno scrittore. e un anno dopo; Coelho lasciò la scuola e visse una vita bohémien, viaggiando in molti posti; Sud America, Nord Africa, Messico, Europa e ha iniziato a drogarsi negli anni '60. Al suo ritorno in Brasile, Coelho ha lavorato come cantautore per alcuni cantanti, ed è stato arrestato nel 1974 con l'accusa di "atti sovversivi" durante il regime militare prevalente all'epoca, che considerava le composizioni liriche di Coelho una pericolosa "sinistra"!
