Avijit Gupta lisans derecesini aldı. (Onur) derecesini 1962'de Coğrafya bölümünden ve 1964'te Kalküta'daki Başkanlık Koleji'nden Yüksek Lisans derecesini ve Ph.D. 1973'te Baltimore'daki Johns Hopkins Üniversitesi'nden. Araştırma konuları arasında yüksek büyüklükteki taşkınlar ve kanal tepkisi, büyük nehirler, iklim değişikliğinin büyük nehirler ve deltalar üzerindeki etkisi, kentsel jeomorfoloji, jeomorfolojide uzaktan algılama ve tropik bölgelerde su ve gelişme yer almaktadır. Başkanlık Koleji, Kalküta, Güney Illinois Üniversitesi, Temple Üniversitesi, Singapur Ulusal Üniversitesi ve Leeds Üniversitesi'nde ders vermiştir. 10 kitap ve yaklaşık 80 hakemli dergi makalesi ve kitap bölümü yazdı ve ortak yazar oldu. 1997-2009 yılları arasında Uluslararası Jeomorfologlar Birliği Büyük Nehirler Çalışma Grubu başkanı ve 1993-1997 yılları arasında Uluslararası Jeomorfologlar Birliği Yayın Sekreteri olarak görev yaptı. Uluslararası Coğrafya Birliği Jeomorfolojide Ölçüm, Teori ve Uygulama Komisyonu (COMTAG), 1988-92'de Komite Üyesiydi. 1998'den itibaren Singapur Ulusal Üniversitesi Uzaktan Görüntüleme, Algılama ve İşleme Merkezi'nde (CRISP) Misafir Kıdemli Bilim İnsanı ve Asya-Pasifik Bölgesi'ndeki Birleşmiş Milletler Kalkınma Programı kurum içi Çevre Yönetimi Eğitim Atölyeleri için Eğitmen olmuştur. 1993-94. Halen Avustralya Wollongong Üniversitesi, Yer ve Çevre Bilimleri Okulu'nda Fahri Müdür Üyesidir.
