Thomas Hylland Eriksen, Oslo Üniversitesi'nde sosyal antropoloji profesörüdür. Oslo'da doğdu, Trinidad ve Mauritius'ta saha çalışması yaptı. Araştırma alanları arasında kimlik, milliyetçilik, küreselleşme ve kimlik politikaları yer almaktadır. Eriksen dr. 1991 yılında polit.-derecesi, 1995 yılında 33 yaşında profesör oldu. 1993-2001 yılları arasında Samtiden dergisinin editörlüğünü yaptı.
Eriksen'in çalışmalarının önemli bir kısmı, Norveç kamuoyu tartışmasında sosyal antropolojiyi popülerleştirmeye ve temel kültürel göreciliğin yanı sıra Norveç milliyetçiliğinin eleştirisini aktarmaya odaklanmıştır. Çoğu İskandinav üniversitesinde sosyal antropolojiye giriş derslerinde kullanılan temel ders kitabını yazmıştır. İngilizce "Küçük Yerler - Büyük Sorunlar" kitabı, diğer birçok ülkede giriş derslerinde de kullanılmaktadır ve diğer büyük ders kitabı "Ethnicity and Nationalism: Anthropological Perspectives" gibi geniş çapta çevrilmiştir. Eriksen, İskandinavya'da sık sık gazete makalelerine katkıda bulunuyor.
2011'de Profesör Eriksen, Avrupa Araştırma Konseyi'nden Gelişmiş Hibe almaya hak kazandı. "AŞIRI ISINMA" başlığı altında, şimdi küreselleşmenin üç büyük krizi üzerine araştırmaları yönetiyor: ekonomi/finans, çevre/iklim ve kimlik/kültür. Bu proje hem karşılaştırmalı hem de disiplinler arası bir projedir. 2012 yılı sonundan itibaren 2016 yılında tamamlanacaktır.
