Kitap, Şanghay'da geçen 1920'lerin Romeo ve Juliet benzeri bir hikayesini içeriyor. 21 yaşındayken Gong, The New York Times En Çok Satanlar listesinde genç bir yetişkin ciltli kitap yazan en genç yazarlardan biri oldu. 2021 Sir Julius Vogel Ödülleri'nde Bu Şiddetli Zevkler için En İyi Gençlik Romanı ödülünü kazandı. Devam filmi Our Violent Ends, Kasım 2021'de gösterime girdi. Gong ayrıca These Violent Delights'tan "tanıdık bir karakter"i takip eden bir yan ürün ikilisi yazıyor.
