De La Cruz ilk uzun romanını 22 yaşında New York'ta yaşarken ve Bankers Trust'ta çalışırken yazdı.
Bu roman nihayetinde satmadı, ancak Little, Brown'daki bir editör, profesyonel yazı kredileri üzerinde çalışmak için bir gazeteci olmasını önerdi.
Serbest çalışmaya başladı ve ilk makalesini 1996'da New York Press'te yayınladı. 1998'de ilk romanı The Cat's Meow'u satana kadar güzellik ve moda editörü olarak çalıştı.
De la Cruz, The New York Times, Cosmopolitan, Seventeen, Teen Vogue ve Harper's Magazine gibi dergilerde makaleler yayınladı.
