Winston Churchill'in resmi biyografisini yazan ve Yirminci Yüzyıl konusunda önde gelen bir tarihçi olan Sir Martin Gilbert, 88 kitabına rağmen “gerçek tarih” diye bir şey olduğunu gösteren bir bilgin ve tarihçiydi. 1936'da Londra'da doğan Martin Gilbert, Highgate School'da ve Oxford'daki Magdalen College'da eğitim gördü ve First Class Honors ile mezun oldu. St Anthony's College'da Araştırma Bilimcisiydi ve 1962'de Oxford'daki Merton College Üyesi ve 1994'te Fahri Üyesi oldu. Randolph Churchill için araştırmacı olarak çalıştıktan sonra, Gilbert Churchill biyografisinin yazımını devralmak üzere seçildi. Randolph'un 1968'de ölümü üzerine, sekiz ciltlik biyografiden altısını yazdı ve on iki ciltlik belgeyi düzenledi. Ayrıca Gilbert, Birinci ve İkinci Dünya Savaşları, Yirminci Yüzyıl, Holokost ve Yahudi tarihi üzerine öncü ve klasik eserler yazmıştır. Gilbert, arşivleri bulmaktan, çalışmalarına doğruluk ve anlam katan görgü tanıkları ve katılımcılarla yazışmaya, illüstrasyonları bulup seçmeye, metindeki her yerden bahseden haritalar çizmeye ve dizinleri derlemeye kadar kitaplarının her yönünü yönlendirdi. Ders vermek ve araştırma yapmak için çok seyahat etti, siyasi şahsiyetlere ve film yapımcılarına tavsiyelerde bulundu ve “savaşanlara ve düşenlere” bir ses ve bir isim verdi.

Eisenhower prepared a somber broadcast announcing that the enterprise had failed. The specter of failure was always present. After a failed landing the Nazi regime would have regained the ascendant. New, terrifying bombs and rockets were ready to be launched. Long-distance submarines were in the final stage of development. The last million Jews of Europe were listed for deportation and death. Failure at Normandy could have given Hitler the chance of continuing to rule western Europe, particularly if the United States, bloodied and defeated in Normandy, had decided-after two and a half years of focusing on Europe-to turn all its energies to the ever-growing demands of the Pacific, leaving Europe to its own devices.
