Or are they entirely separate pursuits, religion being an individual and spiritual matter whereas politics is for the collective and material world? A characteristic answer from Christians is that religion is to do with the whole of life and involves all kinds of ethical choices, although (and here an 'of course' often slips in) it is not party-political.
